Bitmap
A graphic image stored as a specific arrangement of screen dots, or
pixels. Web graphics are bitmap images. A graphic which is defined by
specifying the colors of dots or pixels which make up the picture. Also
known as raster graphics.

Browser
The software used to view, manage, and access web pages. The two most common browsers are Netscape and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Web pages may appear differently depending
on the brand and version of browser used.

CGI
CGI stands for Common
Gateway Interface. CGI allows
browsers to communicate with scripts (programs) installed on servers in
order to process forms, counters, etc.

Domain
Name
A domain name is also called a web address. Like a memorable street
address, it can help people find you online. You can register your own
name, your company's name, key words to describe your business, or even
a short phrase -- whatever will make your web address easy to remember
for your friends or customers. Once you've registered your domain name,
you can begin to build a public web site at your very own address (e.g.,
www.mydomain.com) and create a personalized email address (e.g., me@mydomain.com).

Flash
Flash is a software program from Macromedia that creates vector graphic
animations. The viewer must install the Flash plug-in to play these
files.

Font
A font is a complete set of characters in a particular size and style of
type. For example, Times Bold Italic
is one font, and Times Bold is another font. Times is
a single typeface.

FTP
FTP is the acronym for File Transfer Protocol. It
does exactly what its name implies — transfer files from your computer
to your server, or visa versa.

GIF
Stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF images
are the most widely used graphic format on the web, for line art,
transparencies and animated graphics. GIF images display
up to 256 colors.

HTML
Stands for Hypertext Markup Language; a
language used to describe the various elements on a web page, including copy, images, sounds, frames, animation and more.

Hyperlink
A hyperlink, more commonly called a link, is an electronic connection
between one web page to another web page on the same web site,
or a web page located on another web site.

IP
Address
An IP address is the numerical address of a computer on the Internet.
Each IP address consists of four numbers separated by periods.

JavaScript
JavaScript is a programming language based on the JAVA language. JavaScript can
make web pages more animated and dynamic in terms of graphics and
navigation. Some JavaScript effects include rollovers, mouseovers,
drop-down menus and more.

JPEG
Also known as JPG, stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
File format for full-color and black-and-white graphic images. JPEG
images allow for more colors than GIF images. JPGs are best used for
photographic images, or graphics that use gradients.

Masthead
A masthead is a graphic image placed on top of a web page that tells end
users what page they are on. Masthead images can contain photos, text,
shapes, and/or image
maps.

Megabyte
A byte is the smallest unit of data measurement in computers. The
following conversions give you an idea of how big a gigabyte is:
1000 Bytes (B) = 1 Kilobyte (KB)
1000 Kilobytes (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1000 Megabytes (MB) = 1 Gigabyte (GB)

Meta-tags
META Tags
contain information about your Web page that is read by the server. The
information in the META tags doesn't appear on the Web page itself, but
you can see it if you view the source code. META
tags are placed in the HEAD element, and the most used ones are keywords
and description. These tags are used by search engines, and if done
properly can increase your chances of getting into search engines in a
higher placement.

Modem
A modem (modulator/demodulator) is the hardware required to connect
telephone lines and is essential for dial-up connections to the
Internet.

Online Marketing
Online advertising is done exclusively on the web or through e-mail.
Some various types of online marketing include: affiliate programs; search
engine optimization; banner advertising, posts to discussion lists,
newsgroups and forums; e-mail advertising.

PDF
Stands for Portable Document Format. Created by
Adobe, in its software program Adobe Acrobat, as a universal browser.
Files can be downloaded via the web, sent via email and viewed page by

Quick Time Video
Quick Time Video is the Apple technology that allows video, digitized
sound and music, 3D, and virtual reality to be viewed on your web site.
It's available for Macintosh and Windows-based computers. Click on the

Rollover
A rollover causes a different graphic to appear in place of the graphic
your mouse "rolls over". Also know as a mouseover.

Sans Serif
A style of typeface that means "without feet." Common sans
serif typefaces include Arial, Helvetica, Avant Garde and Verdana.

Search Engine
A search engines is a program that searches documents (i.e. web pages,
which are HTML-documents) for specified keywords and returns the list of
documents. A search engine has two parts, a spider and an indexer. The
spider is the program that fetches the documents, and the indexer reads
the documents and creates an index based on the words or ideas contained
in each document.

Serif
A style of typeface that has "little feet." Common serif
typefaces include Times Roman, Garamond, and Palatino. Serif fonts are
best used in print, as they are easier to read there. On the Web the
serifs can make these fonts more difficult to read, especially at small
sizes, as most computer monitors don't have the resolution to display
them clearly.

Source Code
The
source code is the HTML that makes up your Web page. You can view the HTML
of any Web page, simply by viewing the source code. In
Netscape, select View/Page Source. In
Internet Explorer, select View/Source.

Thumbnail
A small version of a graphic image.
y
Typeface
A typeface contains a series of fonts.
For example, the typeface Arial contains the fonts Arial, Arial Bold,
Arial Italic and Arial Bold Italic.
